No one’s Coming by Kevin Hazzard is a new nonfiction book about the 2014 medical evacuation of health care workers with Ebola in Liberia. A private airplane company has ten days to do what’s never been done before - themes include the federal government getting in the way, the federal government making things happen, public backlash, sacrifice & bravery.
I absolutely devoured Kin, and I still haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I also finally got around to reading Dominion by Addie Citchens from last year, and that rounds out my 5-star reads so far this year.
Realizing that I have only read 2 books published in 2026 so far: STORM AT THE CAPITOL and THE MIXED MARRIAGE PROJECT (almost done with this one). Like them both a lot but they aren’t standouts to me. I have FEAR AND FURY and KIN on hold at the library since before they came out, so anxious to get to those. In the middle of PARADISE and plan to buy ON MORRISON to read after I finish. My backlist standouts are probably my re-read of MOCKINGJAY, Ross Gay’s BOOK OF MORE DELIGHTS, Suleika Jaouad’s BOOK OF ALCHEMY, and ON EARTH AS IT IS BENEATH by Ana Paula Maria. (I am sure PARADISE will be up there too once I finish).
Great list. I'm reading Strangers now and enjoying it especially since I've spent a lot of time on MV. Kin and On Morrison are already on my list. Based on your description, I'm adding London Falling. I love suspenseful narrative nonfiction. I may get around to Fear and Fury but I have to be in the right mood. Sounds like it might just make be sad or mad or both. Although you make it tempting.
I haven't read a single book from 2026! My TBR and the tyranny of my Library holds usually keep me a year or two behind, but I'm having a great reading year so far. A few standouts are Tilt by Emma Patttee (A woman is 37 weeks pregnant in Ikea when an earthquake, "The Big One," hits Portland, OR. , Next to Heaven by James Frey (I know you like A Million Little Pieces. I liked it for the writing and tone more than for the "mystery") and The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck (beautifully written interlocking short stories)
My favorite book so far this year was "Wild Dark Shore" by Charlotte McConaghy that came out last year. It's a real page-turner. I'm reading "Whidbey" right now, which is a brand new twisty mystery and finding it engrossing and complicated. An impressive debut by T Kira Madden.
Dead and Alive by Zadie Smith - loved it. The world needs more Zadie
Nora Webster by Colm Toibin - an older book but a beautiful story about a women's life after her husband does young. Simple but evocative. Still thinking about when she realizes she's experiencing something new and won't be able to share it with her husband, for the first time. Oof!

I just finished Strangers on audio and I too hate how much I loved this. I’m obsessed with this story and it wasn’t even well written.
I thought it was pretty well written. Very engaging. The way she kept us hooked was pretty skilled.
