Whoever said 2024 should not go gently into that good night1 is right. We’re going out with a little bookish fun and chaos. I am here today to rank every single one of the 139 books I read this year2. Then we can go gently, or whatever.
I gotta be honest, I am super nervous about doing this on Substack. In the past, I have shared my rankings for 24 hours only on IG stories, as inspired by Daryl Suite. But, this year, I am being bold and sharing my reads ranked in a place where it won’t self destruct after one day. To be locked into these opinions so publicly is a little stressful. This ranking is a way for me be transparent with, not only my taste, but also with my full year of reading.
As far as process goes, I went through my reading spreadsheet and sorted by star rating. Then I moved books up and down based on quality and enjoyability. The more of both (for me) the higher the ranking. Then I went back through the list at least eight times (I lost track) and rearranged wherever it felt necessary.
This is my list so please know it is heavily impacted by my own tastes. I didn’t try to objectively give you a “best” list, not possible, instead I am ranking on how good I thought it was and how enjoyable I found it. Which means romance novels won’t be placing extremely high on this list, neither will vibe forward fiction, because that just isn’t the kind of book I freak out over, no matter how good it is. Also, these are my rankings as of today, December 30, 2024. I will likely be kicking my self once this publishes — something should be ranked lower or higher — but that is the nature of putting thoughts into the world. So while this isn’t any sort of a disclaimer, this is just to say: Things change. Tastes change. I change3.
If there are episodes of The Stacks4 to go along with any book I put it in bold and left you a link to listen. You know, in case you missed it.
Last thing, this is just a numbered list. I am offering no explanations. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, let’s talk about it5 in the comments.
Before I get to the rankings here are a few of my 2024 reading stats for you.
I read 139 books this year.
Of those books, 46 (33%) were fiction 93 (67%) were nonfiction.
I read a total of 86 (62%) books that came out in 2024.
I only gave a five star rating to 11 (8%) books I read this year. I gave two stars or less to 21 books (15%)
I sincerely hope this is all in good fun. And yes, babe, this is behind the paywall. If you want this tea you gotta subscribe to Unstacked. Lucky for you, an annual membership is 20% off through December 31st. Now is your time.
Alright, y’all let’s get after it.
