Traci - I thought of you today as I am nearing the end of the Lorne Michaels/SNL book when they mention Shakespeare.

In chapter 37 (audio 21:05:39)

Lorne Michaels enjoys reading biographies and he talks most about Shakespeare. He views Shakespeare as the ultimate problem solver- that despite any obstacle, Shakespeare saw to it that the show would go on!

-He had to get the play approved by the Lord Chamberlain and the Monarch.

-Shakespeare’s deadline was sunset, so he might have had to shave 20 minutes from Hamlet to get the play over before dark.

-He wrote expressly for actors in his group.

-His biggest challenge may have been getting productions on while the plague raged. If there were 30 deaths in a week, the London authorities closed the theaters.

So Lorne was respecting Shakespeare and making connections between Shakespeare and Saturday Night Live. And our “plague” was covid.

You must be a fly on my wall!! I’ve been trying to teach myself this summer using those books with the modern translation side by side original. Not going well!😩 Looking forward to this.
